Google and Intel introduced an expanded multiyear partnership on Thursday for Google Cloud to proceed using Intel AI infrastructure and to maintain growing processors collectively.
Google Cloud will use Intel’s Xeon processors, together with Intel’s newest Xeon 6 chips, for AI, cloud, and inference duties. The corporate has used Intel’s numerous Xeon processors for many years.
The businesses will even increase the co-development of customized infrastructure processing models (IPUs), which assist speed up and handle information middle duties by offloading them from CPUs.
This chip improvement partnership, which began in 2021, will concentrate on customized ASIC-based IPUs.
Intel declined to share any info concerning pricing for the deal.
This enlargement comes because the trade is hungry for CPUs. Whereas GPUs are used for growing and coaching AI fashions, CPUs are essential for working AI fashions and inside common AI infrastructure.
“AI is reshaping how infrastructure is constructed and scaled,” Intel chief govt Lip-Bu Tan stated in an organization press launch. “Scaling AI requires greater than accelerators — it requires balanced methods. CPUs and IPUs are central to delivering the efficiency, effectivity and suppleness trendy AI workloads demand.”
Extra corporations have been turning their focus to CPUs in current months as there’s a rising scarcity for the chips.
SoftBank-owned Arm Holdings not too long ago introduced the Arm AGI CPU, the primary chip that the semiconductor big has produced itself, amid a worldwide crunch for CPUs.
